The Sporting Semiauto

Self-loading rifles rule the military world. So why aren’t they dominant in the hunting fields as well?

A modern semiauto like the BAR, shown here with a good aoudad taken in West Texas, has the accuracy, the variety of chamberings, and the handling qualities to be suitable for virtually any North American hunting.

Effective autoloading rifles came on the scene about the same time as autoloading shotguns. If you read some of the old stuff, even 75 years ago it wasn’t uncommon to read a prediction that the semiautomatic would become the dominant sporting rifle action.
