Mattie later asked Rooster, John Wayne's character in the film True Grit, why he kept the one chamber empty in his revolver, and his response was firm. "So I won't shoot my foot off." True Grit was released in 1969, and I suspect most sixgun aficionados knew what Rooster meant by that statement.
